What is Title 1 ?
Title 1 is the largest component under the No Child Left Behind(NCLB) federal education funded elementary and secondary program. It has been around with different names since 1965. The title 1 program provides supplemental education service so that all children have a fair, equal and significant opportunity to obtain a high quality education. Service provision is a collaborative effort by Title instructional personnel, classroom teachers, school administration and parents to give your child more individual attention in the areas of math and reading.
How are students selected?
Student in grade k-2 are selected by the teacher judgement, parents interviews and developmentally-appropriate measures.
Students in grade 3-12 are selected for supplementary instruction through Title 1 based on multiple objective criteria. All students must live in a Title 1 area. Title 1 status is determined by high poverty are public school. The performance on standardized test or other assessment tool is also used. Eligibility is determined by a score of 50% or less. In case where test scores are not available a CPS analyst will work with the school to obtain proof of academic need.
If the number of students eligible for Title 1 services is greater than can be served by the Title 1 staff, students with the greatest need are served first.
Are parents required to participate?
Parents involvement is key to student's academic success. Research has proven that involvement positively effects students academic performance
A meeting before the first making period should take place in your school. At this time you will receive information about Title 1 program in your school. You are strongly encouraged to communicate with your child's Title 1 teacher should you have any questions or concerns.
Funds are allocated each year to encourage parents involvement. The funds may be used to pay for speakers, workshops or to purchase material for home use.
